Government Introduces Bill C‑31, Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act

On February 16, 2012, The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, tabled Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act in the House of Commons.

The Bill proposes many changes to the existing refugee determination system, including modifications to the Balanced Refugee Reform Act (BRRA). The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada is developing a work plan to ensure it is ready to implement the required changes in the specified timeframes, should the bill receive Royal Assent in its current form. While the BRRA was to come into force no later than June 29, 2012, the proposed legislation would amend the coming into force date to allow for a date to be set by the Governor in Council. We encourage everyone with an interest in the refugee determination system to familiarize themselves with the Bill.
